What Is Wedding Insurance?

Wedding insurance provides financial protection for the cost of your wedding in the event that you have to cancel or that something goes wrong. Each policy covers you differently but, for the most part, any deposits you have made will be protected as well as payments you have made to suppliers that can no longer deliver on their promises.

How Much Does Wedding Insurance Cost?

Some insurance types, like your car or home insurance are paid monthly. However, wedding insurance is paid for in a single payment. This can vary depending on the type of wedding insurance you take out and how much cover you need. Typically speaking, you can expect to pay as little as £20 for minimum cover. However, this may go up to around £300 for more comprehensive cover.

What’s Included In Wedding Insurance?

There are different levels of cover you can buy for your wedding. However, most standard wedding insurance packages will cover the following:

  • Venue cancellation
  • Guest cancellation due to things outside of your control such as accidents, death, illness and weather
  • Wedding photos and video
  • Suppliers not delivering goods
  • Damaged, lost or stolen goods such as wedding attire, wedding bands, flowers, food etc
  • Wedding transport
  • Liability insurance

What Does Your Wedding Insurance Premium Cover?

Is My Engagement Ring Covered By My Wedding Insurance?

No. Almost all wedding insurance companies do not offer cover for an engagement ring. Instead, you will need to insure this on a separate policy or add it to your home insurance.

Do You Have To Pay Excess On Wedding Insurance?

In the unfortunate event that you have to make a claim on your wedding insurance, you may need to pay an excess fee. This will vary by policy but doesn’t typically exceed £50 – £100 for a standard policy.

Who Should Be The Named Insured Person On The Policy?

You should take your wedding insurance policy out in the name of the person who is paying for the wedding. Only payments made by this person will be covered under the policy.

When Should You Take Out Wedding Insurance?

Most wedding insurance policies will cover you for two years in advance of your big day. This is why it is important to take out your cover before you start paying for anything as, in some cases, things you have paid for before buying the policy, won’t be covered.

Can I Claim On My Wedding Insurance If My Partner Gets Cold Feet?

Should the bride or groom decide that they simply no longer wish to go ahead with the wedding, this will not be covered by your wedding insurance.

Yes. Most wedding insurance policies will cover you if you are getting married outside of the UK. However, this is something you should check as there may be exceptions to this. Your cover will usually be the same but it’s important to note that this policy will not include travel insurance which you’ll need to take out separately.

Does My Wedding Insurance Cover My Honeymoon?

No. Wedding insurance policies do not usually cover your honeymoon or any other kind of travel. In this case, you will need to purchase a separate travel insurance policy.

Are Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Covered By Wedding Insurance?

Wedding insurance will protect you should one of your important guests fall ill. However, if the condition is pre-existing then you will need to discuss this with the insurer before you take out the policy as you may or may not be covered.

Most policies will cover pre-existing conditions providing they are not terminal and you aren’t awaiting test results. Moreover, this applies only to the bride and groom and any close relatives.

Will Wedding Insurers Cover Me If I Am Pregnant?

A lot of wedding insurance companies will only offer cover if the bride is less than 28 weeks pregnant.

Will I Be Covered If My Or My Partner Are Made Redundant?

As long as you were not aware that the redundancy might happen before you took out your policy, your wedding insurance should cover any deposits you have already made. However, keep in mind that the insurer will not pay any additional costs just so that you don’t have to cancel the wedding.

What Happens If There Are Problems With My Wedding Photos?

Wedding insurance almost always covers your photos and videos. Should there be a technical error or your photos do not come out properly, you’ll be covered to retake them.

What Happens If A Guest Causes Damage At The Venue?

In your wedding insurance package, you should have public liability insurance. This protects you in the event that a wedding guest causes damage to the venue or any property meaning you won’t have to foot the bill.

Can I Take out Wedding Insurance In The UK If I Am Not British?

In order to take out a UK wedding insurance policy, at least one of the people getting married will need to be British.

Will The Marquee Be Covered By My Wedding Insurance?

While wedding insurance does cover the venue, most policies do not include marquee cover. This is something you will have to take out in a separate policy.

Can I Have My Wedding And Reception On Separate Days And Still Be Covered?

Yes. You can usually have your wedding over two separate days and still be covered. However, this is something you will need to discuss with the insurer before taking out the cover. Also keep in mind that you may be limited to how long you can leave it between the two dates.

How Do I Claim On My Wedding Insurance?

Your insurer will give you details on how to make a claim at the time of buying your policy. However, it’s pretty simple and is merely a case of calling your insurer as soon as possible to let them know that you need to claim. They’ll usually ask a series of questions to determine whether the claim is valid and you’ll have to fill in a claim form.

Are All Wedding Insurance Policies The Same?

No. While there is something of a ‘standard’ wedding insurance package,  this will vary greatly between providers. Therefore, it is very important to check the details and ask questions when you purchase the policy to make sure you know exactly what cover you’re getting.

Does My Wedding Insurance Cover Covid-19?

As it stands, wedding insurers do not provide cover in the event that you have to cancel due to Covid-19. This may change in the future and we will update this information where necessary.
